Big Second Half Dooms Lawrence Central

It was only the second true home game for the 13-time state champion Bishop Chatard Trojans and they made sure to make the most of it. The Trojans outscored Lawrence Central 24-3 in the second half to improve to 2-0 with a 34-20 victory over the Bears.

The Trojans looked to score early and drove the ball deep into LC territory but the drive stalled. Looking for an early touchdown, Chatard went for a fake field goal attempt but failed and was stopped by LC’s Trevon Booker.

Both teams tried to take advantage of strong running games. The two teams combined for a total of 439 rushing yards (Chatard 220, LC 219). However it was LC in control early on the backs of Bryce Anderson and Cortaveon Barnett-Bonds. The game’s first touchdown came on a 24-yard run by Barnett-Bonds. LC would score again soon after on a 27-yard FG by Taylor Richardson.

The game’s leading rusher, BC’s Daylen Taylor (34/208/2) put the Trojan’s first points on the board with an 18-yard-run in the second quarter. This was after several stalled drives in the first half. “I kept on telling them, we’re only missing by a few inches,” said Trojan coach Rob Doyle. “If we can find those inches, we’ll be good.” BC went into the locker room trailing 17-10.

The second half was a different story, as BC tied is early on a Ryan Cheek pick-six.

It wasn’t long until the Trojans gained the lead. BC drove down the field and scored on a four-yard pass from Mark Nondorf to Jack Kassenbrock.

The defense continued where it left off, and held LC to single 30-yard FG from Taylor Richardson. LC could only convert on one of five third-down conversions in the second half.

LC looked to regain some momentum late in the forth quarter after forcing a fumble, however could only muster six yards on the later drive.

BC pounded the ball with Taylor and put the game away on a late eight-yard touchdown run. “We found those inches,” said Doyle. “This was a complete game from us, and we knew that’s what it would take. We’ll enjoy tonight, then come back Monday and prepare for Roncalli.”

Bishop Chatard finishes the night with a 2-0 records, while Lawrence Central drops to 0-2 under new head coach John Rodenberg.
